Step-by-Step Perfect Eyebrows

Step-by-Step Perfect Eyebrows

Nothing frames your eyes like beautifully defined brows. Your brows are the most expressive features on your face and they convey to the world your whole range emotions.

They can also convey your personality - subtle and demure or bold and brash. And; using the right tools, you can go from one to another in just a few brush strokes!

Also, very few makeup applications can improve the youthfulness and definition as well as defining your brows.

As makeup artists, we're often asked "How do I get beautiful brows?"

Follow our tips to achieve beautiful brows just like the movie stars, but in your own home!

Get it right and your makeup will look polished and professional, get it wrong and the results can be "tragic"

Great Brows Help You Look Younger!

As we age, the hair in our brows can either grow finer and lighter, almost making them invisible or the hair can thin out - giving a wispy, "patchy" appearance.

"Filling in the blanks" with a natural-looking application and creating definition in the brows returns a youthful structure to the face and gives the effect of "lifting" the area around the eyes.

The “Technically Perfect” Brow Shape

Professional makeup artists use your own face shape and key points in the face structure to design the most “aesthetically pleasing” brow shape.

Here's an image of how this is done:

Point 1 - the start of your brow should be directly above the outer edge of your nostril.

Point 2 - the highest point of the arch of your brow should be at the distance of a line drawn from the edge of the nostril through the centre of your iris whilst looking directly ahead.

Point 3 - the end of the brow should be at a distance of a line drawn from the edge of the nostril through the outer edge of your eye.

Point 4 - the height of the end of the brow should be the same as the base of the start of the brow.

Whether you personally want to follow these guidelines is completely up to you.

Brow Colour

It is generally recommended that for a natural look, you should try to match the mid colour of your hair colour - that is the hair on your head.  We all have colour variations and the mid tone helps tie in the brow with your hair, so that the result is a consistent, natural result.

If you have grey, white or blonde hair, a shade or two darker is recommended - a light to mid brown or grey. It really doesn't look natural if you have grey or light coloured hair and dark eyebrows... there is a disconnection between your brows and hair and the result often looks fake or distracting.

Tools and Products to Achieve the Look

To achieve a natural and professional eyebrow, we don't recommend using brow pencils - because of the thick and heavy nature of the crayon within the pencil, it's difficult to achieve a blended, beautiful brow.

We recommend using a Brow Powder Kit.  Brow powders have a finer consistency than eyeshadow powder - allowing a softer, more natural result.

Load the Brow Defining Brush included in the Brow Define Kit, with product by gently drawing it across the colour or blend of colours that you find best matches your hair "mid colour".

Tap off any excess to ensure a smooth, clean shape.

Lightly define the outline of the brow on the first pass and then copy the shape on the other brow, to ensure symmetry.

Fill in the brows, using soft "feathered" strokes in the direction of the hair, keeping within the boundaries of the outline.

Then gradually layer colours and repeat until you achieve the look that you want.

There are several eyebrow kits on the market - some great and others can have larger powder particles, making it difficult to achieve sharper definition. Most good ones range in price from $30 to $99.
